Great Northern RPO car 42
Here's a deep dive into the Great Northern mid-century RPO car #42 preserved at the California State Railroad Museum during my August, 2008 visit. The car was one of six built by American Car & Foundry (ACF) in St. Charles, Mo. for the 1950 upgrade of the Empire Builder. The car was retired and stored in 1967 after the U.S. Postal Service cancelled mail contracts with all U.S. railroads. GN successor Burlington Northern donated the car to the museum.
