Turbo Train wreck
(Photos by unknown photographer - purchased at auction) This collision took place on Conrail's Metropolitan Region Hudson Div. at Dobbs Ferry, NY on Nov. 7, 1980. The freight had train orders to run against the current of traffic in ABS territory, but was mistakenly allowed to leave the block station at which it received the orders, before the Turbo had cleared. The Turbo, eastbound, had stopped at a signal displaying stop & proceed, fortunately where the approaching freight could be seen. The crew of the Turbo left the cab in a big hurry and were not injured. The crew of the freight received minor injuries, as did some of the passengers on the Turbo. The power car was actually repaired and returned to service a year or so later. It was a very lucky outcome, considering the circumstances.
